Onion Help

I recently had to cut about 6 onions in a row and it was not a fun experience. After complaining about making me cry several times my husband decided that ski goggles would help. Not so much. Does anyone have any idea how to NOT CRY when cutting onions? I love onions but I really hate cutting them.

I KNOW! I KNOW! I have the Food Chopper from Pampered Chef. You put the onion under the blades and then repeatedly hit (push) the top of it. The blades come down and chop the onion. The more times you hit it the finer it chops. The onion essence doesn't go up into your eyes and make you cry when you use it (at least it never has for me). I LOVE it. Cutting onions with it is SO easy. You can also use it to chop just about anything (nuts, etc.). I highly recommend it. It was worth every penny. I've had mine for 6 years, and it's still going strong.

You are sooooo funny! Nice goggles. Can you even see the onions you are cutting? I heard if you wet the onion it helps. I do it but not sure if it really helps or not. Let me know if you find a better solution than the goggles!!!

Hmmm, I vote for the chopper.

I used to try my lab goggles, but they didn't work, either. So much for keeping volatile chemicals from reaching the eyes. A friend of mine from Mexico swears by pouring vinegar on the chopping board. I've never tried it. And I'm skeptical that it would actually do anything. An electric food processor would work just as well as the chopper (at least, mine does).

If you refrigerate (or freeze--but who's going to do that!)the onion first, the gasses aren't so strong. But I love my chopper too, and it also works. It's got to be better than goggles!

Amy, your are such a nut. That's why I love you!
I just saw this on Alton Brown's - "Good Eats"
Cut your onions next to your GAS range stove tops and turn on one or both burners.
The irritants from the onions are sucked into the heat from the flames and burned with the exhaust. It's a chemical change that occurs, keeping your eyes tear free. Try it!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA... I had completely forgot about that!!! When I tried to explain it to Amy (my wife, not my sister) she just rolled her eyes and said "Robert." (you know in that "R-aw-bert" kind of voice)

Amy- you're so cute! I actually LOVE my food chopper for onions as well. But prior to my food chopper days, I heard you can bite on a piece of bread. It sounded crazy but I have tried and it worked for me! Don't remember where I got that tidbit, but whatever works!

yes, I've heard the bread trick too. You hold a small piece of bread in your mouth, with most of it outside of your mouth. The onion vapors will be absorbed by the bread and not make it to your nose/eyes.

Barefoot Contessa or Rachel Ray, I think.
